Position Overview: We’re looking for a Transportation Design Engineer to join our team! This is a great opportunity for early-career engineers eager to learn, as well as experienced professionals looking to lead and shape projects.
In this role, you’ll work on a wide range of transportation design projects—including signing and striping plans, traffic signal design, traffic control plans, and conceptual layouts for complete streets and roundabouts. Most of our work is done in close collaboration with public agencies and private sector clients, and you’ll get to see projects through from proposal to construction.
We offer a flexible hybrid schedule, but we do require local residency to allow for occasional fieldwork and in-person meetings throughout the Bay Area on short notice.
What You’ll Do:
· Prepare conceptual layouts for multimodal improvements and roundabouts
· Design signing and striping plans for roadway and intersection improvements
· Develop traffic signal plans for new or modified intersections
· Create traffic control plans to support construction efforts
· Assist in developing PS&E packages (Plans, Specifications, and Estimates)
· Conduct site visits to support both design and construction phases
· Collaborate with agency staff and multidisciplinary teams
· Help write proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates
· Learn from and support a team of experienced transportation professionals who are invested in your growth
What We’re Looking For: We welcome applicants across all experience levels, including early-career engineers or recent graduates with relevant coursework and/or internship experience.
Required:
· U.S. citizen or permanent resident
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
· Strong interest in transportation engineering and design
· Basic familiarity with AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and Word
· Interest in learning Caltrans, CA MUTCD, and AASHTO design standards
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills
· Eagerness to learn and grow professionally
Preferred (especially for more experienced applicants):
· 2+ years of experience in transportation engineering
· Experience with traffic signal, signing/striping, or traffic control plans
· PE license in California (or ability to obtain within 2 years)
· TE or PTOE certification
· Experience with Synchro, TRAFFIX, VISSIM, or AutoTurn
· Knowledge of signal timing procedures or traffic operations
· Familiarity with complete streets design and ADA-compliant facilities

Position Overview: We’re looking for a Complete Streets & Multimodal Transportation Design Engineer to join our team. In this role, you’ll support or lead the development of conceptual and detailed designs for multimodal transportation projects. Your specific responsibilities and level of leadership will be shaped around your background and goals—this position is open to engineers at all experience levels.
You’ll work closely with public agencies, fellow consultants, and internal planning and engineering staff to craft context-sensitive solutions for streets, intersections, corridors, and communities.
This is a full-time hybrid position based in our San Jose office. Local residency is required to support in-office work, meetings and fieldwork in the greater Bay Area.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities vary by experience level):
· Develop conceptual and preliminary designs for multimodal corridors, intersections, and Complete Streets projects
· Prepare preliminary designs for elements such as protected bikeways, pedestrian enhancements, curb ramps, and transit facilities
· Prepare signing and striping plans, traffic signal plans, and traffic control plans
· Draft or contribute to Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E)
· Conduct field visits to evaluate existing conditions, support design development, and assist with construction support
· Collaborate with planners, engineers, agency staff, and other consultants
· Support or lead proposal writing, scope development, and cost estimating
· Participate in stakeholder coordination and community engagement

Minimum Qualifications:
· U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
· Enthusiasm for Complete Streets principles and multimodal design
· Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset
· Proficiency in AutoCAD (or interest in learning), Microsoft Word, and Excel
· Familiarity with Caltrans, CA MUTCD, and AASHTO design standards (depth of knowledge expected to scale with experience)
Bonus Points (Preferred, Not Required):
· PE license in California or ability to obtain (for mid/senior-level applicants)
· Experience with multimodal/active transportation design and planning
· Knowledge of NACTO Urban Street Design Guide or local Complete Streets policies
· Familiarity with signal design, traffic operations, or tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, AutoTurn, or TRAFFIX
· Understanding of ADA compliance and accessibility-focused design
· TE or PTOE certification

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Transportation Design Engineer, with an emphasis on traffic signal design, to join our dynamic team.
Position Overview:
Our work consists of transportation and traffic related projects, primarily traffic signal design work, that we perform under contract with local agencies, as well as with private industry. We also prepare signing and striping plans for roadway improvements, traffic control plans for construction projects, and conceptual plans for complete streets improvements and roundabout projects. As a transportation Design Engineer at Hexagon, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, most from start to finish, beginning at the proposal stage and running all the way through the construction administrate phase.

Key Responsibilities:
· Design new or modified traffic signal systems.
· Design signing and striping plans for intersection and roadway improvements.
· Prepare traffic control plans to handle traffic during construction projects.
· Prepare conceptual plans for complete streets improvement projects and roundabouts.
· Prepare Plans, Specifications, and Cost Estimates (PS&E) for transportation design projects.
· Conduct field work, including site review during design and design support during construction.
· Write proposals and develop scopes of work and fees for traffic engineering design projects.
· Provide design support and collaborate with our diverse planning and engineering staff to support the wide range of transportation projects Hexagon works on.
· Collaborate with City staff and other members of the design team (engineers at other engineering firms) to ensure project success.
Required Qualifications:
· U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
· 4+ years of experience in transportation engineering, including traffic signal design experience.
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
· Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Civil Engineering in the State of California, or the ability to obtained within one year.
· Proficient in AutoCAD, AutoTURN, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
· Experience applying Caltrans, CA MUTCD, and AASHTO design standards and guidelines on a variety of traffic engineering projects.
· Knowledge of traffic signal control systems and related codes and standards.
· Experience developing plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic engineering projects.
· Experience preparing signing and striping plans, traffic signal plans, and traffic control plans.
· Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
· Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
· Experience/knowledge of Traffic signal timing procedures.
· Experience with traffic operations analyses and traffic studies.
· Traffic Engineer (TE) or Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
· Complete Streets design, including bulb out design, curb ramp and ADA design, and protected bike lane design.
· Experience with TRAFFIX, Synchro, VISSIM, or other traffic operations analysis software.
